Role of Nurses in preventing clinicians’ burnout in the healthcare work force
Clinicians’ burnout refers to the emotional exhaustion, and a feeling of loss of personal efficacy in the workplace (University of Michigan, 2021). Not only does it lead to difficulty in retaining high quality healthcare personnel but also leads to bearing of heavy costs by the organizations (University of Michigan, 2021). However, leadership skills in nursing can prevent the clinicians’ burnout. This Discussion Board will take a closer look at the role of nurses in preventing clinicians’ burn-out in the healthcare work force. It will also discuss various models of care in terms of healthcare costs and level of patient care.
The nurses have a critical role in a team-based model of care. A team-based model of care is the one that involves patient-focused care by engaging the patients actively in their care, while inspiring the healthcare professionals to use their knowledge, experience and certification to the fullest towards the patient’s care (Smith et al., 2018). There are four attributes of a successful teamwork, namely, a clear goal, a social structure, a supportive organizational framework, and expert coaching for teamwork (Smith et al., 2018).
In their key message 3, the Institute of Medicine (2011) discussed about how the role of nurses is critical in bringing transformation in the healthcare system in the United States. From bedside to boardroom, the nurses should bring in the leadership qualities to become accountable for their contribution in delivering high-quality healthcare, along with the other leaders from other healthcare professions (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Thus, nurses have a significant role in an interdisciplinary team and they are equal caregivers as the other workforce personnel are. The nurses can prevent clinicians’ burnout by creating safety cultures, ensuring that the staff needs are met, encouraging autonomy, facilitating cross-cultural communication and promoting team-based care (University of Michigan, 2021).
For the implementation of a team-based model, clinical-care model, fiscal models and business-operational models have been suggested.
Currently, FFS or Fee-For-Service model is used as a method to pay for the services of clinicians. (Smith et al., 2018). However, this model should be sifted to a Value-based payment method that rewards the clinicians on the basis of the quality work they have provided since the FFS model does not provide reimbursements to the clinicians for their quality care input. Thus, Value-based models should be used to enhance the importance of team-based model for ensuring safety, quality and effective healthcare delivery (Smith et al., 2018).
