Introduction Discussion Board
Good morning everyone! I am Lisa Vasquez, a healthcare professional, a mother to a 3-year-old daughter and a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Internal Medicine Department of Loyola Hospital. I live in Chicago, Illinois and through this Discussion Board, I want to present the Health Care policy issue in my state Illinois.
Talking about my city, Chicago, which is one of largest cities in the United States, has become a global city today. It is a thriving city for trade and commerce, and a home to people of diverse background and nationality who come here to pursue their American dream (Chicago.gov, 2021). Although Chicago is a well-known city in the Illinois, there are a few healthcare-policy issues that need consideration. One such issue is that of Joe Biden’s budget proposal having dropped the Hyde Amendment, which bars covering most of the abortions from federal funding (Chicago Tribune, 2021). Hyde Amendment was spearheaded by Henry Hyde, who was an Illinois Representative, in the year 1976.
The Hyde Amendment puts restrictions on the abortions that are federal funded. Joe Biden’s budget proposal campaign promises to remove ban on the federal funded abortions, which according to reproductive rights group harms people of color and low-income women (McCammon, 2021). In the wake of this campaign, the public funding of abortions would be allowed and the Human Right to life will be compromised (Reuters, 2021). Although the step would be a good step for women affected with rape, incest, it would however hamper the human rights that support the equal and inalienable right of people to life.
In light of the healthcare policy and amendment of the law, I would appeal to both the Illinois State Senator, Mattie Hunter and Representative, Mr. Danny K. Davis whose address I have been able to locate at the Illinois State Board of Elections website (Illinois State Board of Elections, n.d.). I would also like to make an appeal to the Federal Senators, Mr. Richard Durbin and Ms. Tammy Duckworth and Federal Representative, Ms. Marie Newman (govtrack.us, n.d.) to look into the matter and push the government to make laws that should not infringe the equal and inalienable Human Rights.
