Introduction to Environmental Racism and the Documentary

The documentary trailer “There’s Something in the Water,” by Ellen Page and Ian Daniel, depicts how the picture-perfect image of Nova Scotia, the Canada’s ocean playground, begins to crack when viewed with a closer lens at the ground level. ‘Environmental Racism’ is a social evil that taints the image of Canada. It is defined as a phenomenon of intentional positioning of the hazardous wastes, landfills, pollutants, and incinerators mainly at the site where minorities, discriminated by the race, color and low-socio-economic groups live (Weintraub, 1994).  This paper tries to explore Environmental Racism, the bug that is eating the humanity and lives of minority groups living in the Canada through a review of the documentary trailer “There’s Something in the Water”.

Environmental Racism and Minority Communities

The trailer shows how minority groups, especially Blacks have been exposed to the filth comprising of body parts, foods, animals, anything to everything (Page and Daniel, 2020). It shows how community environment impacts the people living in the vulnerable areas where the minorities live. The Environmental racism has badly impacted the communities and it’s killing, as shown in the documentary. The trailer shows how the families exposed to such environs are dying out of diseases like Cancer. On top of it, the trust in the legislature has been broken by several governments and the rights of people are being disregarded by the governments. “Canada is not a nation, it is a corporation,” is a line that gives the gist of how Canadian minority groups are being harassed (Page and Daniel, 2020).

Statistical and Research Evidence

According to Bullard et al. (2007), the outcomes of environmental racism are shocking, statistically. The research shows that African-American children are five times more prone to developing lead poisoning because of the environments they are exposed to than their Caucasian counterparts (Bullard et al., 2007). Thus, environmental racism is an evil of the society that is an outcome of people being discriminated against race, color and low socio-economic positioning.

Conclusion

Concludingly, Environmental Racism needs to be eradicated to make this society a better place to live for minorities.
