An Email to the House of Representative for the Passage of Bill HR 5223
The Honorable Ro Khanna
306 Cannon House Office Building
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Subject: Letter of persuasion for the Passage of Bill HR 5223 to the Honorable Ro Khanna
Dear Mr. Khanna,
I, Lisa Vasquez, am a Constituent of the …(name of the organization)…Being a Constituent of …(name of the organization)..., I have the expertise in looking after the issues pertaining to the matters involving Violence in the Healthcare workplace. Having been in the industry as a Registered Nurse for …years and academically being a Doctorate of Nursing Program, I have been actively involved with the administrative works of the organization.
At the outset, I would like to thank you for all the works you have been doing for the betterment of the country people. However, there is a matter that requires your kind attention. Referring to the Bill HR. 5223 (Congress.gov, 2018) that was Introduced in the House to address workplace violence in healthcare set-ups pursuant to the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970), I, as a Constituent and a responsible citizen of the United States, urge that this Bill be passed in the House to ensure a comprehensive plan for the protection of healthcare workers who are usually exposed to various forms of violence in the workplace.
As we are aware, the Bill HR 5223 was Introduced in the House on 03/08/2018, it has still not been passed as a Legislation. It would come as a shudder to you and the other Policy makers that Health Care Workers are five times greater at a risk of Workplace Violence than other industries (Arnetz et al., 2015). Not only does it include physical assaults, threats of assaults but also verbal abuse that can lead to psychological distress and physical violence (AHA, 2018). Since I have been closely witnessing the matters of Workplace Violence with the medical staff, usually done by the people belonging to different sects, it becomes all the more important for me and for you to review the matter and take a step forward towards the passage of the bill. Passing the Bill would be a welcoming step for myriad healthcare workers who have been facing the issue of any to every form of workplace violence.
In regards to the Violence against healthcare workers including, doctors, medical staffs as well as technical staffs in the hospitals, American Hospital Association (AHA) as well as American Nursing Association (ANA) have also come in support. AHA’s Hospitals Against Violence (HAV) movement shares best practices on prevention of violence at workplace and preventing human trafficking (AHA, n.d.). Likewise, ANA has also extended their support for the act and in prevention of Workplace Violence, they have issued the statement that nursing profession will not tolerate any form of Violence from any source (ANA, 2015) and that all the employers and nurses in academia, research and practice should collaborate to build a culture of respect and dignity for the nurses and prevent workplace violence (ANA, 2015).
I, therefore, urge you to partake in the decision making for the passage of the Bill as it would be a fair decision for healthcare workers as well as for the Congress people for their active involvement and an achievement towards the betterment of medical fraternity against the workplace violence.
I would look forward to knowing your response in this matter and would look forward to your support in this grave matter.
Thanks, and Regards
Lisa Vasquez
