DACA Policy and Professional Licensing in Indiana

Referring to the Document, titled, “New practice in Indiana: No professional licenses for

DACA recipients,” (Cook and Herron, 2018), the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy that came as a temporary relief for over 80,000 undocumented people with work authorization (Wong et al., 2017) has again come as a shockingly standstill for their work authorization in the United States. According to Indystar, the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency has put up new questions about the citizenship status of many a youth in Indiana again, who according to the agency are not qualified to hold professional degrees to practice in the state (Cook and Herron, 2018). 

Employment Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

To me, this has come as a shocking news as the policy is far from what has been enshrined under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ Article 23 on Employment, which mentions that everyone has the right to just and favorable remuneration and protection against unemployment (United Nations, n.d.). The youth who were brought as children to the United States and have been granted to stay in the country, should get the rights justified in their best interest and of other country people. It is indeed an issue that needs proper redressal.

DACA Policy Changes and Their Implications

What came as a further jolt to me was the policy making process or simply put, the rescinded DACA policy that came in during the ruling of the President, Donald Trump (The Kaiser Family, 2018). According to the policy, new applications’ acceptance was halted all of a sudden without any legislative or administrative procedure (The Kaiser Family, 2018). One of the key findings was that the youth under the DACA policy are healthy and are given health coverage. If people are refrained from getting the just opportunities and rights, it will create a situation of wreak-havoc in the country. Not only would these people be refrained from health, education and work authorization but would raise myriad concerns in the country. It is thus, a policy to be reframed and be made just for all the people in the United States.
