Stakeholder Discussion Board 5
The Discussion Board herein takes a closer look at the two stakeholders, American Hospital Association (AHA), and American Nursing Association (ANA), who have a policy issue to agree on and another to disagree on. The two issues being explored in this paper include, Nurse Staffing policy and the other being Violence in the Work Place.
Nurse Staffing is an aspect that is related with the patient safety measures in any healthcare setting (ANA, 2019). There is a strong correlation between patient safety and adequate nurse staffing (ANA, 2019) and the studies have been conducted which indicate that nurse staffing levels affect fall rates in patients as the impact is reduced while providing critical care to the patients (Kalisch and Lee, 2012). On the similar lines, American Hospital Association has urged the Congress to prioritize funding for the support of healthcare work force in meeting healthcare demands of the country (AHA, 2021). AHA has urged Congress to expand nursing schools and training programs as well as expediting the visa authorization process for overcoming the shortage of existing nursing staff in the country (AHA, 2021).
These evidences prove that the Nurse Staffing is vital in patient-care and adequate healthcare delivery for which both ANA and AHA agree upon.
Violence in the Workplace is another issue being discussed here. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) defines Violence in the Workplace as “violent acts that may include physical assault or threats of assault being directed towards the person at work”. It may also include verbal abuse that can lead to psychological distress and physical violence. Health Care Workers are five times greater at risk of Workplace Violence than other industries (Arnetz et al., 2015).
In response to prevention of Violence at Workplace, there is a legislation HR 5223 (Congress.gov, 2018), according to which, the department of Labor should address Workplace Violence in Healthcare facilities and Healthcare Employees should adopt comprehensive plan for protection of Healthcare Workers in Workplace. AHA’s Hospitals Against Violence (HAV) movement shares best practices on prevention of violence at workplace and preventing human trafficking (AHA, n.d.). Likewise, ANA has also extended support for the act and in prevention of Workplace Violence have issued the statement that nursing profession will not tolerate any form of Violence from any source (ANA, 2015) and that all the employers and nurses in academia, research and practice should collaborate to build a culture of respect and dignity for the nurses and prevent workplace violence (ANA, 2015).
