Forestry Methods

This paper answers three questions related to forestry methods. The first part cites the advantages and disadvantages of various Forestry Methods namely, Clear-Cutting, Reforestation Thinning, Shelterwood Cutting, and Selective Cutting followed by answering on the Effects of deforestation on humans, animals, and the environment. The last part suggests the sustainable methods of forestry and how they are important. 

Advantages and Disadvantages of Forestry Methods

Clear-Cutting: Advantages and Disadvantages

Clear-cutting is a forestry method that involves removing the entire stand in one cutting and obtaining the plant reproduction either artificially or by natural seeding from the very adjacent stands or the trees cut in the clearing process (Keenan and Kimmins 122). The pros of the clear-cutting method include making the harvesting and replanting of trees efficient along with an increment in soil-water retention due to tree-felling (Pennybaker n.p). However, the cons of clear-cutting also cannot be ignored. Some of the cons of the practice include the deleterious effects on plants and wildlife of the area due to the destruction of the natural animal habitat and loss of recreational land (Pennybaker n.p.). 

Restoration Thinning: Advantages and Disadvantages

Restoration Thinning is a method of selective removal of some trees in areas of excessive stem density to get an ecologically more beneficial ecosystem. The pros of Restoration Thinning are that the process helps in bringing the forests back to the conditions they were in before catching fire and helps to make the forests more fire-resilient (OregonForests n.p.). The cons of the process are that it is not the most effective way of thinning as there are other methods also and there is a compromise of the resident biota of these forests (Brown et al., n.p.). 

Shelterwood Cutting: Advantages and Disadvantages

This method involves removing the mature stand in two to three cuts (USDA.gov, n.p.).

The pros of the process are that it improves the vigor as well as seed production of remaining trees while the site for new seeds is being prepared (USDA.gov, n.p.) and the cons of the process are Tree damage, soil compaction, and species’ invasion (Miller n.p.). 

Selective Cutting: Advantages and Disadvantages

It is a process of forestry that involves selectively cutting trees to support ecosystems better than clear-cutting methods (Reference.com, n.p.). The pros of the method are that it provides resistance to pests and diseases but the cons are that it can lead to increased damage from storms, fires, and ice (Refernece.com, n.p.). 

Effects of Deforestation on Humans, Animals, and the Environment

Forests are home to wild animals, plant species and play a key role in maintaining ecological balance. On Humans, the effects of deforestation are deterioration of human health as the forest species seek habitat among humans owing to the loss of their habitats (Braga n.p.). It also leads to food insecurity and loss of livelihood (Braga, n.p.). The animals also have detrimental effects like loss of habitats, wildlife extinction, and ocean acidification. The effects of deforestation on the environment include soil erosion, climate change, and floods (Braga, n.p.). 

Sustainable Methods of Forestry and Their Importance

The sustainability of forests means offering a holistic approach to ensuring that forest activities deliver social, economic, and environmental benefits, balance competing needs, and enhance the functions of the forest in the present moment and future (PEFC, n.p.). They are important for the subsistence of the forests, communities dependent on forests, and the development of lives (PEFC, n.p.).
